As of December 5, 2021, omicron cases in India have grown to a total of 17. This is a matter of grave concern for the government as initial studies have found this variant to be highly contagious. As for the travel industry, it is no more than a nightmare.
To help the travel industry and deal with the new variant successfully, the Indian Government has started intensive screening at International airports for travelers arriving in India from at-risk countries. All travelers have to go through an RT-PCR test and the report has to be negative in order to leave the airport.
The list of countries deemed as "at-risk" countries is
- United Kingdom
- All 44 countries in Europe
- South Africa
- Brazil
- Bangladesh
- Botswana
- China
- Mauritius
- New Zealand
- Zimbabwe
- Singapore
- Hong Kong
- Israel
At the IGI airport, 35 rapid RT-PCR testing machines are functional on Terminal 3 which can reduce the testing time to so much as half an hour, which was observed by Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.
While domestically, tourist spots like Mathura-Vrindavan have had little impact due to the new strain. There are almost 0 cases reported in the last 24 hours, while the inflow of tourists from all over the world has been increasing day by day. Travel Agencies like Vaishnav Tour And Travels and other car rental agencies have been providing their services of Mathura sightseeing and Vrindavan temple darshan with an increasing number of calls for inquiries per day.
After the heavy lockdowns, this news is of significant importance for the travel industry as it provides a sight of relief after a long time.
